IELTS Speaking Cue Card, March 2018: A Situation When You had to Earn Money.

Describe a situation when you had to earn money on your own to spend on a particular thing. Please say

– What was the situation?
– What did you buy?
– How did you feel after getting it?

Answer:

My parents have infused me with the culture of hard-work and economic independence (collocation). I prefer earning money before spending it on something else. When I was about seven years old, I wanted to purchase a violin. Since (cohesion) both my parents were hard-working, middle-class Americans, they could not afford to purchase the expensive musical instrument (collocation). My father then came up with the idea of teaching me how to earn money.

He was a chef at one of the famous restaurants in downtown Santiago. He taught me how to make a Classic French Sandwich and (cohesion) purchased the necessary ingredients (collocation) so that (cohesion) I could set up a little sandwich stall in our neighbourhood during weekends. It was called “Little Joe’s Violin Sandwich”. Soon everyone in our locality knew that the money I earned from Sandwiches would be used to finance a violin for me. People soon came in huge numbers and I could collect the necessary amount in two months.

As (cohesion) it was my first income, it gave me tremendous confidence (collocation) to earn in life. Moreover (cohesion), I was excited to accomplish my dream of purchasing a violin and learning how to play music from that instrument (note parallelism – purchasing, learning).
