It is important for counselors to study ethical and legal principles and the decision-making process because it helps them understand the minimum standards of behavior that society will tolerate, as well as the ideal standards to which they should aspire. Legal standards are enforced by police and interpreted by judges, while ethical standards are created by members of the counseling profession and enforced by ethics committees and licensure boards. Professionalism is closely related to best practice, which is the very best a counselor could be expected to do.
