Assignment
Compose a 1- to 2-page (in addition to a Works Cited page) in which you explore a specific example of the use of a logical fallacy in the media and how it affects the
media’s role as the “fourth estate.” Your thesis will answer the question: “How do representations of ___ fallacy in the media influence the claimsmaking process?” The
following must be explored
somewhere in your essay:

-Definitions for specific fallacy and fourth estate

-Publication information for the example (original source/medium, target audience, creator/claimsmaker)

-Information about claim(s) being impacted by the use of the fallacy in the media (including counterclaims)

-Definition and explanation of agenda setting theory and how it relates to the influence of fallacies as well as the role of the media as the fourth estate

Remember, a complete essay requires an introductory paragraph that ends with a thesis statement, at least one body paragraph that supports the thesis statement, and a
concluding paragraph. You will need to conduct research for this assignment, and all sources must be cited in-text and in a works cited page according to MLA
guidelines to the best of your ability. Additionally, you must reference and define sociological concepts from readings or lectures.

Constraints
Because this is a response essay, first person may be used (but probably isn’t necessary). Be sure to support your response with specific references to outside
research, the text(s), or class notes. Research is required. Follow MLA style for documentation, formatting, and mechanics. Length: 1-2 pages + Works Cited (if
research is used)
