Part One: Selection and Brief Information about the Children
1. In collaboration with the instructor and the classroom teacher at the setting where you
have been assigned or selected, identify three children between ages 3-6. One of the
children should have culturally diverse characteristics (language, ethnic and cultural
backgrounds). (NAEYC 1a, 5c)
2. Begin by collecting information about the children to create a brief informational file.
Include in the file details about the unique characteristics of each child, classroom and
community contexts. Observe each of the children for at least 30 minutes using the
observation form (in the appendix). Note language used, verbal interactions and overall
physical and socio-emotional characteristics.
Conference with the classroom teacher and find out details about the children’s overall
performance and any other relevant developmental aspects about them (NAEYC 1a, 2a,
3b, 5c)
3. Based on your observations, and using the knowledge derived from your Child
Development course, identify a developmental theory or theories to frame your
observations and interactions with the children. (1a)
4. Write a brief commentary indicating the reasons for the selection of the two children and
comments based on the preliminary observations and informational data collected about
each child. Describe the reasons for the selection of the theory/theories that will serve as
framework to work with the children.
