Comparing 1950s Television with Today’s Programming

Your objective with this Blog posting is to compare/contrast an episode of a weekly television series from the 1950s (sitcom, drama, procedural, game show, variety –
your choice) with a currently produced show on television from a comparable genre (your choice from network, cable, internet/OTT [“over the top” – e.g. Amazon,
Netflix, Hulu]). You are free to use a series we’ve explored in class, but you’ll need to use a different episode than the one explored in class or as assigned home-
viewing. With your comparison, you may focus on any of the following:
Narrative, including structure, subject matter, sexuality, violence.
Genre Conventions.
Character types, stereotyping.
Representation of Social/Economic Class, Profession.
Gender dynamics; home, family, work responsibilities. Conventions, rituals of love, dating and marriage.
Family dynamics. Who holds the power in the family? How are family problems solved? What are the rules and what is the punishment if rules are broken?
Race; ethnicity. Who is (and isn’t) represented within the world of the television show and what roles are they playing? How well does the television show reflect the
diversity of American culture during the decade of that television show?
You may use any of the television episodes in the folder “1950s Television”, posted on Blackboard, under “Assignments”. Or you can choose any other television episode
from a 1950s television show (check out YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, TVLand, the Library’s Media Center – make sure you can view the episode in its entirety.)
Very important: In your Blog, include the episode title, series title and original date the episode aired (you can find this on IMDB.com) for both episodes you are
using in your comparison analysis.
