write a 1-2 paragraph response to 4 out of 7 short answer questions about the short story “The
Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”, and you will complete an outline for an essay on
one other, but you will not actually complete the essay.
The most important element of this assignment is to display a clear understanding of the text and
an ability to analyze it with purpose. All of the questions listed below (for short answer and for
the outline) have been integrated into the tutorials you have completed over the last week and a
half in the fiction unit of this semester. If you are unsure of any of them, I advise that you return
to your notes/tutorials instead of seeking answers from Google as it may not provide you with
the best match. You are also, as always, more than welcome to email me with questions and/or
concerns.
Short Answer Portion
With that being said, below you will find the five questions. You will answer four them in
complete paragraphs. You will need to copy and paste the question into your document so that it
is clear which question you are answering. Please include the number associated with your
question on your document.

• Is this story meant to be realistic or is it meant to be a tall tale?
• How does the narrator feel about his encounter with Simon Wheeler?
