Larry Diamond (2015) points out that there has been a democratic recession since 2006 with a decline in aggregate Freedom House scores every year since then. Two big authoritarian powers, Russia and China seems to be on the move. The Arab Spring has degenerated into renewed dictatorship in the case of Egypt, and into anarchy in Libya, Yemen and Syria. How can you explain such a phenomenon of decline of democracy in today’s world? Why is democracy performing so poorly? Does your evidence and argument support or refute that democracy is the most ideal political system (according to Francis Fukuyama’s book the End of History and the last man) in the contemporary world?
