Philosophy Statement on Reading/Literacy in the Content Areas
A teaching philosophy is a self-reflective statement of your beliefs about teaching and learning. It should also discuss how you put your beliefs into practice by
including concrete examples of what you do or anticipate doing in the classroom. When you begin searching for teaching jobs you will need a general teaching philosophy
to present to prospective employers. For this class, you will create a teaching philosophy that focuses on reading/literacy in your content area.
Your Reading/Literacy Teacher Philosophy Statement will include:
• your conception of literacy teaching and learning in the content areas.
• a description of how you will teach literacy in your content area.
• justification for why you will teach this way.
Your Philosophy Statement should:
• demonstrate that you are already reflective and purposeful in how you will teach literacy and why it is important for students when learning your subject.
• communicate your literacy goals as an instructor and your corresponding actions in your future classroom.
• demonstrate that you understand the reasons (research) behind teaching reading and writing/literacy in your content area.
• show what you believe is the end goal of teaching literacy in your future classroom
• give concrete examples of how you and your students will own literacy strategies in your future classroom.
Writing Guidelines:
• 2 pages, typed, double spaced, Times New Roman
• Use present tense and first person
• Make sure you completely understand the literacy terms and examples you are providing; additional research may be needed.
• Include teaching strategies and methods to help people “see” you in the classroom. Include specific examples of your teaching strategies, assignments, discussions,
etc. Help them to visualize the learning environment you create and the exchanges between you and your students.
• Make it memorable and unique. Prospective employers may see this document. What is going to set you apart? What will they remember? Your philosophy will come to life
if you create a vivid portrait of yourself as a person who is intentional about teaching practices and committed to your career.
o You will use the readings and classroom lessons to form your draft philosophy statement
o I will provide feedback on this draft, make sure to utilize my feedback for your final statement.
o You will draw from all course content to revise and rewrite your final philosophy statement
o The draft and final statement cannot be the same document with minor changes. The final should reflect that you have learned more and grown in your understanding of
literacy during this course.
