Developing a Sampling Design
Order Description
Identify the sampling procedure that you will use and that is most appropriate for your research topic. First, ask yourself whether you will be using probability
sampling or non-probability sampling procedures. If you are planning on using probability sampling, you need to specify whether you plan to use simple random sampling,
systematic sampling, stratified sampling, disproportionate stratified sampling, or multistage cluster sampling and how you plan on using it in detail.
If you are going to use non-probability sampling, you will discuss one of the following methods: purposive/judgmental sampling, quota sampling, or snowball sampling
and describe in detail how you plan on using it.
When you discuss how you plan on using the sampling design, you must describe who or what you will be sampling, identify your sampling frame, when and where you will
be doing this, and of course how. [Even if you are technically taking a census of the entire population and are not using a specific sampling technique, you will need
to address how the census will be conducted and generalizability issues].
Use your “sampling vocabulary”, which includes words like units of analysis, elements, population, study population, sampling frame, etc.
