Select one of the following options:

1. From the Mapping the Social Landscape text, summarize Article 36 (“Diversity in the Power
Elite”) and Article 37 (“The Rise of the New Global Elite”) In addition, explain why these two
articles are important to the study of American society.

2. From the Mapping the Social Landscape text, summarize Article 50 (“Civilize Them With a
Stick”) and Article 55 (“Invisible Inequality”). In addition, explain why these two articles
are important to the study of American society.

3. From the Mapping the Social Landscape text, summarize Article 9 (“Working at Bazooms”)
and Article 32 (“At a Slaughterhouse, Some Things Never Die”). In addition, explain why
these two articles are important to the study of American society.

4. From the Mapping the Social Landscape text, summarize Article 56 (“Revolution and Regime
Change”) and Article 58 (“The Cosmopolitan Canopy”).

For whichever option you select, the 50-50 Rule is in effect. The 50-50 Rule states that approximately 50% of your paper should be a summary of the two articles, and
approximately 50% of your paper should constitute a sociological analysis in which you discuss the reasons why the two articles you’re writing about are important to
the study of American society. When explaining the sociological significance of the two articles, your are required to integrate two theories / issues / incidents /
perspectives / concepts from lecture or Henslin text.

• The paper is worth 40 points.
• The paper should be 4 to 5 pages in length.
• The paper is to be divided into five sections: (1) Introduction (2) Summary of Articles (3) Commonalities and Dissimilarities (4) Application of Two Theories, etc.
(5) Conclusion – each subheading introducing the section should be in bold print
• The paper is to be word processed or typewritten using a 12-point font and should be double-spaced.
• The paper is due Thursday December 7, 2017 at the beginning of the class session.
• Late assignments will not be accepted.
