In this assignment you will use the question that you worked with for your I-Search Assignment. Then you will locate 2 – 3 sources (from magazines, journals, or newspapers) on your topic that argue for the side you DON’T agree with. Your job is to write a 500 t0 750 word essay in which you summarize the sources, evaluate their arguments, and determine whether or not your opinion changed based upon the information provided by the sources.
Please use the following organizational structure:
Introduction – This section should include a summary of the topic and why it is controversial. Write to a general audience. It should include your position on the topic BEFORE you did your research and analysis. Include your thesis statement (this is your topic plus your controlling idea—or how your opinion has been impacted by the research).
Opposing Arguments: This section should summarize and paraphrase the oppositions’ main claims and the evidence that supports those claims. This should be written in an objective tone and with an eye to accuracy. Who are the persons, institutions, agencies, etc. who support this position?
Analysis: This section is your chance to evaluate the opposing arguments presented in each of your references. Review logical fallacies and the material on critical thinking, and then discuss where the opposition may have it right and where they may have it wrong. Use your critical thinking skills to evaluate and synthesize your references. What, if any, are the presuppositions of this position? Assumptions? Propaganda? Logical fallacies?? What “vested interest” might these persons, institutions, agencies have in supporting their agenda or position? What tricky rhetoric is the source using to hide their agenda? Use the CRAAP method discussed in class and the work you did for the rhetorical analysis to help with this evaluation.
These last two sections – Opposing Arguments and Analysis – can be combined into a single section. There should be no opinion in these/this section(s)!
Conclusion: In this section, please describe any changes that have occurred in your position, however minor and in either direction. Perhaps you are MORE convinced than ever of the validity of your views. Maybe, your eyes have been opened or your mind changed. How has evaluating the oppositions’ views impacted your own? What is your reaction to the facts, data, premises, and assumptions–in short, the position of this opposing side? (This is an opportunity to briefly offer your own position.)
my side it important and the opposite side its not important to learn.
