To correctly answer the question: To what extent should we be concerned about AI in the future. This writing with have to have a personal, national and global response. And the personal and national response would be from the view from someone living in Hong Kong. The structure of an IR therefore becomes: -Introduction -Personal Perspective + personal response + scenarios and courses of action + Source evaluation (if relevant) -Local/National perspective + personal response + scenarios and courses of action + Source evaluation -Global Perspective + personal response + scenarios and courses of action + Source evaluation -Conclusion and Reflection 1. Introduction Introduce the topic and question. Explain why you think it is an important/interesting topic for investigation. Explain what your opinion/position is. For this essay you might say that approaches to development are at the heart of dealing with all our global challenges and therefore an important topic to investigate. Your pre-research opnion maybe that the ultimate goal of development should be happiness. You should also explain which IR topic this question links to. 2. The Global Perspective When looking for a global perspective a good start is to research organisations that take a world view such as the United Nations (and its specialised departments such as UNICEF, UNDP, UNODC UNHCR etc…), the World Bank, World Health Organisation or any other relevant international organisation that is concerned with the issue you are studying. For our development question the UN has very clear goals and definitions of what development should entail. These definitions and goals are outlined in the ‘Millenium Development Goals’ and now the ‘Global Goals’. We could also refer to any International NGO’s that are working on these issues such as the Red Cross, MSF etc… Analysis/evaluation We should always try to analyse/evaluate the information we have found. In this case, for the global perspective we could analyse how effective the UN has been in achieving its development goals. We could research in what areas they have succeeded and in what areas they have failed. Personal Response At the end of your global perspective section, you should write a personal response. This is your opinion or reaction to the issues you are researching. For example in this essay, you could say what you think the globally agreed approach to development should be, whether you agree with the UN or not and why. Future Scenarios and Courses of Action Explain what may happen in the future in relation to your global perspective and what actions could or should be taken. For example you could speculate that if the UN achieves its Global Goals by 2030 it will require all countries to work together and to agree upon the ultimate goals of development. 3. National/Local Perspective In your essay you must compare your local perspective with another national perspective. These perspectives may best be found by looking at what the government policy, attitudes and actions are as well as the national culture. For this question we could research Hong Kong’s approach to development, which may value financial/economic wealth as the ultimate outcome. We could compare this with Bhutan. The government of Bhutan has created a national policy to development which focuses and prioritises happiness and sustainability above wealth and economic development. The best national/local perspectives sections contrast with each other (in this case its money vs happiness). Analysis/Evaluation For this question we could analyse the strengths and weaknesses of each approach. E.g focusing on money and wealth may be unsustainable and lead to environmental destruction and conflict. It may also lead to a lot of inequality in a society. Focusing on happiness may be much more sustainable in every way. Personal Response Which approach do you think works best and is most desirable? Why? Future scenarios/Courses of action Bhutan may achieve gross national happiness and set an example for the world that development must be focused on achieving happiness and sustainability. Other countries will follow this model of development. Hong Kong will continue to increase its wealth, but at the expense of its environment and the happiness of its people- ultimately this will lead to collapse. 4. Personal Perspective Relate the issue in question to your own life, your experiences, your family, how it effects you. A personal perspective MAY also include that of another individual, but as far as possible, try to link to yourslef. For example you could describe your life in Hong kong and how you feel that society here is very much focused on making money and material wealth and that you feel pressure to get amazing grades that will lead to a well paid job etc…Maybe you feel as though not enough emphasis is given to having fun, spending time with friends and family. You may also have noticed more development in ‘green areas’ around Hong kong and the destruction of your environment. Analysis/Evaluation Explain what you think are the advanatages and disadvantages for your life associated with different development outcomes. Personal Response May not be relevant for the Personal Perspective section as it is all personal anyway. Future scenarios/Courses of action For this essay you could speculate that if Hong Kong continues with its current focus on financial/economic development you will have a lot of pressure in your life, that you may succced in achieving wealth, but not happiness. If Hong Kong hopes to achieve a more balanced form of development in the future the government should focus more on protecting the environment, using alternative energy sources and looking at strategies for reducing people’s stress such as regulating working hours. 5. Conclusion/Reflection In this section you should summarise your main points from the whole essay and your opinions. You should then reflect on what you have learned in researching and writing this essay- this could include new ideas, how your opinion has changed and skills that you have utilized. Reflect on what you found easy/difficult and what you might try to do better or improve on next time. NOTE* AT THE END OF EACH PERSPECTIVE YOU MUST ADD SOME BRIEF SOURCE EVALUATION. You should comment on the usefulness and reliability of the sources in a few sentences.
