We can work on Strategies for creating an emotionally healthy mind

Learning Objectives

  1. Develop three strategies for creating an emotionally healthy mind
  2. Identify three methods for improving self-management through increased emotional intelligence
    Background

Having an emotionally healthy mind is crucial and affects how we express our emotions to those around us. Many biological, social and mental factors contribute to our emotional health. In order to keep one’s emotional health in check, the importance of these factors must be explored.
One strategy for creating an emotionally healthy mind is to continually socially connect with people on a daily basis. By interacting with people daily, this allows an individual to have a set of emotional “norms” and also helps keep our emotions in check. Perhaps the most important part of connecting with people is that it must be face-to-face. Face-to-face connections build trust between members of a relationship and encourage superior emotional health. While socially connecting over social media can be a great thing, it tends to have a negative effect on our emotional health. For some people, it evokes a feeling of loneliness and low self- esteem; which are not components of a healthy, emotional mind. To illustrate, the University of Salford in the UK conducted a study on this very topic. This study reveals: “About half of the survey’s 298 participants, all of whom identified themselves as social media users, say that their use of social networks like Facebook and Twitter makes their lives worse. In particular, participants noted that their self-esteem suffers when they compare their own accomplishments to those of their online friends.” Additional studies reported by Alicia K. Swope in “The Media and Self Esteem” (Applied Social Psychology, 2012) state that social sites such as Facebook only show the positive side of a user’s life and thus may cause a negative comparison for someone with low esteem. Many users base their idea of self-worth on how many “likes” or “shares” a post receives. Users, therefore, are constantly subjecting themselves to an unrealistic comparison.
Another tip for creating a healthy, emotional mind is managing stress. Stress may include physical stress, mental stress, or emotional stress. The term, “managing stress” does not imply that stress must be eliminated completely. It simply means that one must keep their level of stress in check. In the video below, the narrator lists beneficial activities that are proven to reduce stress. One example mentioned in the video as being beneficial is making a “to-do” list and checking off the required items one-by-one. This will help the list maker stay organized and reduce potential stress. To learn about additional ways of reducing stress watch the video below.

Self-management is an important factor in developing well-rounded emotional intelligence. Self-management could be compared to a checklist of qualities that should be present in someone with a healthy emotional intelligence. Also, there are many techniques that can be used to create a stronger sense of self-control. The first strategy is to identify what you are feeling. By identifying the emotions or situations that are causing a person stress, one can work to prevent the things from happening in the future. This recognition of the situations that are causing a person to have a difficult time helps make it easy for the person to avoid these situations in the future.
The second method to improve your self-management is to make an honest determination of the underlying cause. This statement implies that it is very important not to place blame on someone else, but to whole-heartedly examine the situation at hand. Sometimes, this means that we only have ourselves to blame for the hardships and troubles that arise in our life. This level of honesty may be hard to grasp at first, but in the end, it helps better our self-management and makes our emotional intelligence stronger.
Lastly, one of the most important steps in developing system of self-management is to take action and change any contradicting ideals. This is likely the hardest step because sometimes people have an unwilling attitude. Some people may realize that their emotions were inappropriate for the situation at hand, or others may realize that their feelings should have been directed to another situation. By breaking these detrimental habits, an individual may begin to replace them with new ones.

Implementing a plan to develop a healthy mind can encourage leadership skills, but also this plan gives people the ability to produce better results while working at their job. When creating a development plan for yourself, it is important that the plan is practical and realistic in order for it to have optimal results.
Part one of this plan encourages altering one’s thoughts. Positive thinking is very beneficial because our thoughts actually help make our bodies healthier. In a study performed by John Hopkins Medicine, researchers found that “people with a family history of heart disease who had a positive outlook were one-third less likely to have a heart attack or other cardiovascular event within five to twenty-five years than those with a more negative outlook” (The Power of Positive Thinking, n.d., para. 2). So, not only do people benefit biologically from thinking positively but, it also increases emotional intelligence. Practicing this step of positive thinking will also help people to increase their productivity in the workplace. When working is no longer viewed as a chore, it allows for less stress and better performance.
The second step in helping to create a healthier mind is to make a plan to reduce stress. Although this may sound cliche, reducing stress really does lift a huge burden off of your physical body. Steps that are taken to reduce stress make the human body “calm down” and stop fighting the chaos of stress and start worrying about other more important things. There are several steps that can be taken to reduce stress. These include taking up a new hobby, going for a walk, or simply reading a book. Any actions that cause one to relax or take their mind off of demanding tasks, is contributing to the goal of producing a healthier mental state. Reducing stress also increases job productivity by allowing one’s mind to focus on the different responsibilities and business that must be taken care of each day. This will also encourage people to take on new leadership roles because they acquired a fresh outlook on life. This outlook makes people feel a certain emotion that evokes the need to take on new challenges.
The final step in creating a healthier state of mind is to take action and change bad habits. After a self-assessment, one will determine the flaws that need rehabilitation and assistance to improve. This is a good technique for self-management. Following this, the most important part is to make a plan to change habits that could damage an individual’s high emotional intelligence. Changes should be made gradually and in an effort to create a healthy outlook on life. Using different types of motivation to make this plan a reality is a good way to start. Using positive reinforcers to replace the old habits is a great way to force yourself to do actions that will create a healthier state of mind in the future, even if it is not recognizable now. Changing bad habits can also make you more eligible for new leadership positions or opportunities. Per Management Expert Peter Drucker, there is much time spent on teaching leaders what to do, but not nearly enough time spent on teaching them what not to do. By changing bad habits, one can perfect their actions and be eligible for opportunities like a new job or gaining trust from another person. This also helps an individual’s self-esteem by reassuring them that they have refined their mental state and can now be confident in their emotional intelligence.

The ideological improvement of Winston Smith in 1984 One of the two most popular books of George Orwell, 1984, delineates a critical vision of things to come world comprising of three extremist states; Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia, always at war with one another and holding masses under cautious perception and whole control. In this way, the normal individuals in 1984 can’t create in any ways, aside from physically, on the grounds that every one of their contemplations and thoughts are leveled out of the Party. Feelings are undesirable, with the exception of the committed love of Big Brother, and the significant loathe of Emmanuel Goldstein, and the adversaries of the Party. Gathering individuals are being viewed through telescreens throughout the day, so when the principal side effects of strangeness are seen, they can be “restored” right away. What’s more, telescreens are continually furnishing individuals with the fitting thoughts. Indeed, even the future language of Oceania, Newspeak, keeps individuals from “irregular” musings. All he pointless words, for example, the ones bearing just slight contrasts, are being expelled from the lexicon. The remainder of the words are being denied of their auxiliary and “inappropriate” implications. In like manner, sooner rather than later, party individuals are not going to have the option to consider insufficient thoughts. Winston Smith is by all accounts the main man in London who has human musings. There may be other individuals like him around, yet because of the present framework, individuals are kept from appearing “irregular” contemplations and sentiments. Winston Smith is a common gathering part, with the exception of the way that he is a reasoning animal. He has had considerations some time before he begins to compose his journal, and his contemplations have not been suitable in the eye of the Party. His Therefore, he has been a thoughtcriminal for quite a long time, however he had the option to conceal it, by understanding what the Party anticipates from a perfect part, and emulating it. The unpremeditated demonstration of continually believing is his initial step to upheaval. The following degree of revolt is to begin composing his journal. In spite of the fact that the demonstration of composing is by all accounts futile, even hazardous; it is palatable. Winston Smith begins to compose his journal in an abnormal manner, he doesn’t consider what he is composing, he just gives his contemplations a chance to typify on the paper. This strategy is called programmed stating; “current psychodynamic speculations of character recommend that characteristics, demeanors, thought processes, motivations, and recollections that are contrary with the individual’s cognizant mindfulness might be separated from mindfulness and once in a while communicated plainly over the span of ordinary waking conduct.” (Encyclopedia Britannica) Using this technique, the individual is uninformed of what will be expressed: “All of a sudden he started writing in sheer frenzy, just defectively mindful of what he was setting down. His little yet puerile penmanship straggled here and there the page, shedding first its capital letters lastly even its full stops.”(Nineteen Eighty-Four, p.11) “He didn’t have the foggiest idea what had caused him to spill out this flood of junk.” (Nineteen Eighty-Four, p.11) In the wake of starting his journal, he before long begins to consider how the routine functions. He is in a decent position to have the option to see into the administration, on the grounds that Winston works in Minitrue, Ministry of Truth, where he redresses some previous articles. He recollects an occurrence when he found a verifiable proof of the supposition that the Party changes past occasions to demonstrate his announcements. Winston reaches the resolution that lone the proles are free in his general public, and they are the ones who could overcome the specialist of the Party. He expresses: “If there is trust it lies in the proles.” (Nineteen Eighty-Four, p.60) The main issue with the proles is that they couldn’t care less about governmental issues, and they don’t have the foggiest idea what sort of intensity is in their grasp. They are the extraordinary lion’s share (85%) of the general public, however they live politically unwittingly. “Until they become cognizant they will never revolt, and until after they have revolted they can’t end up cognizant.” (Nineteen Eighty-Four, p.61) Smith acknowledges what the Party does. He knows how they misrepresent the past and how they control party individuals and the proles, yet he doesn’t have the foggiest idea why they do this. “The quick favorable circumstances of misrepresenting the past were self-evident, however a definitive rationale was baffling. He took up his pen again and composed: I see HOW: I don’t get WHY.” (Nineteen Eighty-Four, p.68) He likewise understands that the genuine opportunity is the opportunity of musings, and he feels that it can’t be detracted from individuals: “Opportunity is the opportunity to state that two in addition to two make four. In the event that that is in truth, all else pursues.” (Nineteen Eighty-Four, p.69) As needs be, toward the finish of Part I, Winston is a genuine radical, he discovers numerous things about the Party, yet he doesn’t do anything against it. He begins to revolt in his private life, when he begins an issue with Julia. The Party considers sex just the best approach to deliver natives in the nation. The Party needs to annul sexual contact, in this way they urge youngsters to embrace manual semen injection. As Daphne Patai brings up, the Party “forbids sex aside from the reason for reproduction, on the suspicion that sexual pressure could be diverted as enthusiastic disdain of a foe and energetic love of a conceptual pioneer.” (Patai, 1984) Julia professes to be an honest, immaculate gathering part, yet she regularly engages in sexual relations subtly with other Party individuals. This is her method for defying the present framework. ” ‘Have you done this previously?’ ‘Obviously. Multiple times — well scores of times at any rate.’ ‘With Party individuals.’ ‘Indeed, dependably with Party individuals.’ ” (Nineteen Eighty-Four, p.104) Winston and Julia begin to have a mystery coexistence. Winston rents a room from a prole man and they meet there routinely. They have intercourse, devour things from the underground market and ramble. Winston converses with Julia about governmental issues. In spite of the fact that Julia isn’t really inspired by it, she tunes in to him and concurs, in light of the fact that she cherishes him. “‘I’m not inspired by the people to come, dear. I’m keen on us.’ ‘You’re just an agitator from the midriff downwards,’ he advised her. She thought this splendidly clever and flung her arms round him in joy. ” (Nineteen Eighty-Four, p.129) Winston is sitting tight for an indication of the Brotherhood; the underground association, headed by Emmanuel Goldstein, that is covertly attempting to topple the Party. He needs to accomplish something adequately against the Party. Individuals know nothing about Brotherhood, yet there has dependably been gossip of something like the Brotherhood. Winston truly has faith in the Brotherhood, and he has for a long while been itching to be a piece of it. “It had occurred finally. The normal message had come. For his entire life, it appeared to him, he had been trusting that this will occur.” (Nineteen Eighty-Four, p.131) O’Brien, the person who Winston has dependably accepted to be a defiant individual, welcomes him to his home. What Winston expects is some sort of inception to the Brotherhood. He needs to have a place with an association that truly accomplishes something against the Party. He has dependably accepted what the captured extremists admitted, and he needs to do comparative things to those. O’Brien took Winston and Julia in the Brotherhood. Smith gets the book that Goldstein composed and he begins to peruse it. He is fulfilled on the grounds that he believes that his inquiries will be replied, yet toward the end he winds up baffled by the book, since it doesn’t give any answers yet. ” He had still, he reflected, not educated a definitive mystery. He saw how; he didn’t get why. Section 1, similar to Chapter 3, had not really disclosed to him anything that he didn’t have any acquaintance with; it had just systematized the information that he had officially.” (Nineteen Eighty-Four, p179) Subsequent to perusing two parts of the book, the most noticeably terrible thing happens to Winston and Julia. They have been deceived and than captured. For reasons unknown, the prole man that let the space for them and even O’Brien are the operators of the thoughtpolice. Accordingly Winston isn’t just disillusioned by the book, yet in addition by the man that he truly regarded. Winston is taken to Miniluv where O’Brien takes him close by. O’Brien educates Winston in a Platonic strategy. He poses inquiries to the extent Winston gives the correct answer. O’Brien , finally, gives the solutions to Winston’s inquiries. ” Now I will disclose to you the solution to my inquiry. It is this. The Party looks for power totally for the good of its own. We are not keen on the benefit of other people; we are intrigued exclusively in power. Not riches or extravagance or long life or satisfaction: just influence, unadulterated influence. What unadulterated power implies you will see by and by. We are not quite the same as every one of the governments of the past, in that we comprehend what we are doing. All the others, even the individuals who looked like ourselves, were weaklings and charlatans.” (Nineteen Eighty-Four, p.217) Toward the end, when he saw all that he needed, he was taken to Room 101, and he had been changed. At the highest point of his ideological advancement, Winston turned out to be mentally killed. He comprehended what he needed to know, yet he didn’t trust himself. The main thing he trusted was the Party, and Big Brother. All things considered, Winston experiences a hard and long procedure of ideological advancement. As indicated by Adibur Rahman, “Winston Smith needs to come “up for Air” so as to speak with his veritable voice of self which is obviously, not cynical. He never again recognizes himself with the current insensitivity of the general public.” (Adibur, 2002) First, he didn’t deliberately consider revolting, his subliminal considerations and his fantasies were his perspective. At that point the following level was to eject his sentiments and musings through his journal. After that he began to follow his considerations deliberately, at that point he was not satisfied with supposing, he needed to act. Toward the start, he just revolted in his pr>
