Diet Coke VS Diet Pepsi
Throughout the years beverages known as soda or pop have been the center of debate for ethicality from marketing to ingredients to public health. Two of the largest competitors in this market are Pepsi and Coca-Cola which each have extensive brand offering that extend past the carbonated sugar beverages. Marketing strategies of both companies have failed many times in years past but two specific examples for this discussion are Diet Cokeâs Karl Lagerfeld Campaign of 2012/2013 and Diet Pepsiâs removal of Aspartame. Diet Coke launch an unethical campaign centering fashion designing icon Karl Lagerfeld with advertisement showing thin models, cans and bottles labelled specifically for Karl and Karlâs personal endorsement explaining he has lost 80lbs by drinking Diet Coke all day from the moment he woke up (N.A., 2013). This advertisement not only portrayed potential outcomes that are not achievable but also sends a non-body positive message. Three ethical elements are unethical about this add truthfulness, social responsibility and idolization. Coke has presented a product that has not been tested or proven to create the results past the word of the endorser and there for untruthful. They have also violated their social responsibility by not creating a body positive campaign and at the same time idolized someone for using their product which goes against the word of God. Pepsi on the other hand, in 2015, reformulated Diet Pepsi removing Aspartame, a potentially cancer causing ingredient, to boost sales. The advertisement of this change was informative to consumers as a potential harmful ingredient in other products and responded to consumer complaints regarding the use of Aspartame, in which they attributed 5.2% sales decrease from 2013-2014.
