This will be 5-6 pages long (double spaced, 1” margins, 12 size times new roman font, APA citation style). You will need a minimum of six academic sources (academic, peer-reviewed books and journal articles) for this review. Your social problem should have a ‘myth’ and a ‘reality’ that you will uncover using the literature review. If your social problem is overwhelming because it has too many misconceptions about it, focus on one or two of the misconceptions and include a ‘nod’ to the other misconceptions. Some social problem examples:Justice equality in the criminal justice courtsmyth: “we stand equal in the courts”reality: bail system privileges the wealthy, laws impact discretion, public defendants are overworked, etc immigration myth: “immigrants are dangerous and take civilian jobs”reality: immigrant work is the backbone of the U.S. economy, employers are the one’s ultimately in charge of hiring, most civilians will not take job because of poor pay and work conditions, early immigrants have lower crime rates than average rate of US citizensSuggested Layout (but not mandatory):Introduction (brief paragraph): identifies the myth and provides an overview for your paper (includes your central thesis)Body (varies): do NOT just summarize the literature use your literature to support the general misconceptions/myths of your social problem (~1/2 page). Include the harms it creates. allocate roughly one page per source that identifies the unique contribution the author(s) have towards the ‘reality’ of your social problem and how it fits with the other literature. Though this process, you should also be able to identify the cause(s) of your social problem. Conclusion (brief paragraph): remind us of the original myth and then argue why this misconception causes a problem, i.e. informs the creation of poor policy or distracts us from the real issues. Identify how your literature review can inform better policy
