The advent of industrialized capitalism fundamentally and permanently changed human society on many levels. Changes in the structure of human labor relations as well as the impact exerted upon the surrounding environment led to an overall decline in the health and well-being of a vast majority of people. Understandably, criticism of this “new way of life” quickly emerged. Based on the readings by Misa, Engels, and Hughes, as well as the in-class presentations, please discuss the following four (4) points in a well-written, 300-400 word essay (you may always feel free to exceed that amount if you have more to say):
- In Chapter 3 of his book, Leonardo to the Internet, Misa states that “The beer known as porter deserves full recognition as a prototypical industrial-age product alongside cotton, iron, and coal.” (p. 65) What arguments does he provide to support this statement?
- Misa, Engels, and Hughes all discuss the dangerous working conditions and high mortality rates of industrial workers in England. Identify at least three (3) examples that they cite as causes of these high worker mortality rates.
- Both Misa and Engels describe the voluminous amounts of pollution produced by industrialization. Can you locate and identify any other areas of the globe today where similar conditions exist as a result of industrialization?
