read Spinoza’s Metaphysics then answer these questions:

1. Classical or traditional theism holds that God is all-powerful, all-knowing, all-good, the ground of all existence, and who guides all of nature and history according to His purpose. Spinoza has an somewhat unusual conception of God. What aspects of the traditional or classical theistic conception of God does he retain? What aspects does he reject? In your view, should Spinoza have used the word “God” to describe his understanding of reality, or was that misleading?

2. How does Spinoza explain the difference between imagination and reason? Why does he think that imagination is a source of error?

3. How does Spinoza use the distinction between adequate ideas and inadequate ideas to explain what the passions are, and esp how they differ from actions?

4. In the Preface to Ethics III, Spinoza writes that “Most of those who have written about the affects and men’s way of living . . . seem to think of man in Nature as a kingdom within a kingdom.” Would he have classified Descartes as someone who writes about humanity as “a kingdom within a kingdom”? What reasons does Spinoza give for rejecting this approach to moral psychology?
