-Evangelicals have always been a driving force in American politics, although prior to the 19thcentury, they were largely progressiveinstrumental in the fight against slavery and political corruption, as well as movements for womens suffrage and direct democracy. Moreover, until the second half of the 20th century, they were largely democratic. Now, of course, Evangelical Christians are largely (but not exclusively) conservative and republican. Why, according to your readings, caused this shift?
