When I was little, I would sit in front of the radio listening to shows in the area ofcriminal law. When I went graduated from school in Milwaukee, several of us nurses moved in together and the first thing we did was buy a black and white TV. Once a week, I watched Perry Mason. A couple of years ago my husband and I decided to use the antenna instead of cable and, guess what! You guessed it! I am watching the old Perry Mason shows that I saw in Milwaukee in 1960! I still watch every show I can in the area of criminal law. Right now I am an RN and Colorado Addiction Counselor. I still watch all the shows that have criminal law. I see clients from DOC that have just gotten out of prison. I have not explored a job within the DOC or DOJ. I have been happy to see the clients I see to help them adjust back into society in a healthy way. I write letters and go to court for clients from DOC. I will be 80 in April so I am no longer looking for a career other than the one I have.
The private sector does have a good career for me.
Action:
I am more particular about getting a job because so many substance abuse clinics are only doing DUI counseling and are more and more are run by the government agencies.
Awareness:
All of the private-sector DUI or addiction jobs must go through OBH and DORA, both are under the state of Colorado. This means more paperwork on your own time and the pay is low.
Yes, the private-sector overlapping with government jobs. The same work I am doing at a private-sector is also done at government clinics.
Action:
The three that I found that have private and government equivalents are, Clinical Case Manager/Housing to assist the poor or homeless populations, CACIII, Primary Health Therapist and 3 skills for each that are the same in private and government jobs. A contrast-and-comparison component can be combined to assess the jobs’ demands and assignments.
Awareness:
A lot of government jobs have private-sector jobs with the same titles, benefits, or duties. All three positions have the same titles and duties. The differences in government jobs is that the job itself is managed by state protocols, such as Dora and OBH who are designed to protect the client and the business. All three have the same descriptions: Professional who is “wonderful with her patients”, is detailed multi-tasker, and CACIII. These are the same for both private-sector and government jobs, The responsibilities are the same in both: Complete assignments, do progress notes, progress notes, and any paperwork required by the organization to manage a caseload to counsel using Evidence Based Practices. Both help the client move forward. The private-sector jobs do not make as much salary and do not have the benefits the government jobs have.

Action:
I am an RN, have my Bachelor’s degree in the Science of Psychology, am a CACIII (Colorado Addiction Counselor)Department of Corrections) and DOJ (Department of Justice), work for the DOC ATP (Department of Corrections), and am qualified to work with a new program that was made into law the summer of 2017 – Track F, Level II 4+. I am in school getting my masters in Criminal Justice. I worked in the Methadone Clinic at Denver Health for 15 years, Choices in Living Counseling Center for 26 years, and A&D Counseling for 6 months. The skills and training will benefit my marketability for a future career in criminal justice.
Yes, this job could serve as a job that could lead me to a government job in my career.
Awareness:
There are many Private-sector jobs which do not have the restrictions for employment distinguished to their government counterparts. The government is more unpredictable then the private-sector jobs if they are depending on them for support. This can be a great way to gain essential knowledge and preparation for a future job or career.
