Task 2 is a research paper that successfully uses sources to prove the supporting points from your thesis in the order they are listed in your thesis, credible sources. The most important aspect of the assignment is assuring that the essay demonstrates your ability to systematically argue/illustrate the supporting points in a logical, well-organized manner. Write at least two body paragraphs for each of your supporting points (more if you have two supporting points), and be sure to use at least two sources per supporting point, which would be around four pages of essay. As long as you have a minimum of two body paragraphs per supporting point (more if you have two supporting points), two sources per supporting point (with a minimum of seven total sources used in the essay), and four FULL pages of actual text in double-spaced, Times New Roman 12-point font, you have a working task at minimum length.

Introduction:

A sentence that will hook the readers. A sentence or two of background (optional). An introduction to the argument (this can be in the form of topic sentences). Your thesis statement.

Research suggests that [argumentative claim] because [supporting point 1], [supporting point 2], and [supporting point 3]. You can have between two and four points.

Conclusion:

Start with your restated thesis statement. Write a sentence or two recapping each of the main points discussed in the paper (this would be the supporting points).

Those two paragraphs are the easiest, but the body paragraphs aren’t too bad, either, especially since you have the notes you wrote for Task 1. Here is the quickest way to set up body paragraphs:

Sentence 1 will be a topic sentence that introduces the topic or reminds the reader which supporting point you’re working with. Sentence 2 will introduce the source (focusing on the source’s credibility). Sentence 3 or more will focus on evidence from the source in the form of a direct quote or paraphrase (remember to properly cite). Next, you will explain what the quote or paraphrase means. Then, you will explain how it proves your thesis. Finally, you’ll create a transition to the next paragraph by explaining what you’ve told them in this paragraph and what you’re about to discuss.

This will seem redundant after a while, but it really helps move the essay along. I was speaking to a student last night, and this really got her going, so I do recommend it. Here’s a video of me talking about body paragraphs: Drafting a Paragraph Using Annotations

Be sure that for each reference entry at the end of the paper, there’s at least one in-text citation in the body of the essay.
