Welcome to the Application Form assessment part of your PPD1.
This is designed to give you experience of completing an application form using a very common format. You will be asked to answer 3 questions which have a word limit of 200 words per question.
Use the resources available to you:
Top Tips for Success
Create a draft in Word and have it checked by two other people for spelling, grammar and to see whether you’ve really answered the question.
Prepare, research, think
Read the job description- Spend time reading and dissecting the job description as the clues to what the employer is looking for are there. Take notes and highlight each of the skills required for the job, how can you show you have the relevant skills required? Dont worry if that proof is in a different sector, its the skill you want to show off. For example; delivering results to targets and deadlines, delivering excellent customer service etc. Try to incorporate keywords from the job description and how the company describes themselves, such as dynamic, solution orientated. Remember skills can come out of the most unlikely places, so really think about what you’ve done to grow your own skills.
Take your time, applications are important documents and it’s better to spend the time to do a really good job than try and do hundreds of poor applications.
Use the CAR approach to structure your answers, Context, Action, Result. Or STAR if you’re happier with that. Use real examples; think about situations you’ve found yourself in academically, professionally in your part time roles, or in your hobbies.
The CAR technique is an effective way to demonstrate how you apply your skills and knowledge to a range of experiences including employment, volunteering, academic work and extra-curricular activities. When answering questions, always ensure you give a concrete example to back up your claim. Use the following technique to guide you when answering.
CAR can be used at every stage of your Employment Journey, so dont forget to implement CAR when creating your CV, Cover Letter and at the interview stage(s).
Your answers will be scored using the following scale:
Score:0 – Not addressed or no evidence relevant to the criteria
Score:4 – Few (10-20%) criteria addressed – evidence lacks detail, relevance or currency
Score:8 – Some (21%-50%) criteria addressed – evidence lacking detail, relevance or currency
Score:12 – Most (60%) criteria addressed – evidence lacks detail or relevance or currency
Score:16 – Most (75%) criteria addressed with current and relevant evidence and examples
Score:20 – All (100%) criteria fully addressed with current and relevant evidence and examples

Helpful notes
Be systematic when approaching questions like this. Have you answered all of the points that the employer has mentioned in their job spec? Dont assume that they will make the right assumptions about your skills and experience unless you tell them exactly what you want them to know.

Note that they have focussed on skills and experience not character attributes, for example, saying youre organised with no example to back up how you can prove this wont score you full marks. Saying something about how youve developed organisational skills through successfully managing a busy workload in xx and then explaining why this is relevant to the role would be much stronger.
Watch your word count theres no space for waffle or long winded phrases, for example in addition to vs also.
Make sure its typo free, especially if youre saying youve a good eye for detail!
Score:0 – Not addressed or no evidence relevant to the criteria

Score:12 – Most (60%) criteria addressed – evidence lacks detail or relevance or currency
Score:16 – Most (75%) criteria addressed with current and relevant evidence and examples
Score:20 – All (100%) criteria fully addressed with current and relevant evidence and examples

Helpful notes
Set out the context of the example clearly. Try and use as recent an example as possible.
Make it clear what the objective of the team was and the size of the team in the C Context part of your answer.
In the A Action part Talk about what YOU did, YOUR responsibilities not just what the team was doing. Youll need to mention the other members but the focus of the answer is your work and the impact of that
R Results What did the team achieve and how were you part of that? If its a measurable achievement, like a target reached or a grade awarded give that as part of the answer.

Helpful notes
This is not a trick question! One of the reasons that employers ask this sort of question is to find out how you cope when things dont go as they should have done, something that happens in professional workplaces and when it happens companies need people who are resilient and flexible to deal with those situations.
Once youve described the situation (the Context), remember that the question is asking you to focus on what you did and what you would do differently for the A Actions part. What did you learn? What did you do well? is what goes into the R Results part.
