Overall, the highest bottled water consumption in 1999 was seen in the Western Europe, whereas Asia recorded its lowest use. The largest increase in bottled water consumption in 2001 was seen in Asia. In contrast to this, Western Europe recorded the lowest percentage growth in packaged water usage.

In 1999, Western Europe accounted for 48 percent of the global share of bottled water consumption. It was closely followed by the United States, where people consumed 15 percent of the total global packaged water usage. In contrast to this, both Australia and Asia consumed just 2 percent of the total packaged water used around the world. However, Latin America accounted for just one-tenth of the world’s unlimited usage.

In 2001, Asia witnessed an increase of a whopping 14 percent in the usage of packaged water. It was closely followed by Latin America and New Zealand, where growth was close to 12 percent. In contrast to this, Western Europe recorded close to 2 percent growth in packaged water consumption, which was the least of all the 8 regions under study.
