We can help with Computational Fluid Dynamics – Part B

The current assignment requires testing student’s ability to meet the learning outcomes and todemonstrate their capability in critically reviewing specialist Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)literature, their understanding on how to set up the assumptions, design scenarios, analyze andinterpret modelled results, and justify accuracy by use of CFD theories via GPO associated software(s)under Fire Engineering discipline, for instance, Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) or other softwarels), asapplicable.

Upon your completion of current assignment, it is an intent for you to be partially well equipped withrelevant fundamental capabilities on resolving general fire engineering design issues via CFOmodelling for daily commercial conversancy and associated business affairs in future.

The assignment contains only one mini-project associated section and will be gauged by bothqualitative and quantitative considerations. You are required to critically review specialist CFD literatureand appropriately apply relevant theories! similar way forward in setting out meaningful assumptions, design scenarios, analyzing and interpreting modelled results, and justifying accuracy based on amidmodelling fires in a realistic! partially realistic built environment by use of CPD modelling.

You are required to clearly define your fire engineering issue(s) which has/have to be addressed, tocritically review CFD literature, and to ‘cite, explain, and apply” relevant literature’s “cases, theoriesway forward‘ in setting out meaningful assumptions and design scenarios, analyzing and interpretingmodelled results and justifying your accuracy amid solving your defined engineering problems likepractical projects, including but NOT limited to the context as discussed and covered amid the classes. You are required to model fires in a realistic! partially realistic built environment by use of FDS. You areNOT required to go to much sophisticated through lots of mathematically derivation of equations butciting CFD modelling papers and applying their associated “cases & theories“, to facilitate yourexplanations and justifications will suffice. This open-ended section will require you to demonstratelogical justifications and self-reflected arguments to showcase your effort put forth on how to analyzefire engineering problems by use of CFO modelling.

Please be advised to read, make reference to, and apply relevant journal papers, conference papers, consultancy reports, fire codes, standards, etc… and make proper Harvard Citations for them.

You are NOT required to go to much sophisticated model (scale/size/complexity of model(s) is NOT anissue) but essentially illustrating your good understanding on how to make FULL use of your CPUmodelled results for analysis and WELL justify your accuracy.

This assignment, however, will require you to follow typical reporting structure! format! references!usage of suitable codes of practices!standards!etc… for which are similar to running a fire engineeringconsultancy mini-project, as discussed in class, if deemed appropriate! applicable. You can makereference to any real layout and drawings but your honour and citation to relevant original source(s),authority and/or Iiterature(s) for current academic purpose is required. You can also alternativelypropose your partially realistic built environmental scenarios. Flexibility is allowed to modify/proposethe/your scenarios as you make referenced to, if deemed logical! applicable. Note that when

conducting CFD model related development and runs at this stage. the main objective is to mimicresolving fire engineering consultancy related issue(s) that may be of concern and to make goodreference to CFD associated literatures via citing and applying relevant theories/cases, NOTnecessarily to provide a sophisticated modelling BUT sufficiently with appropriate assumptions.determinations, and justification by presuming a practical consultancy project is run in reality will be anadvantage.Any additional effort put forth on theories explanation and modelling complexities in aforementionedsections is NOT required but may be advantageous to be bonus-like credited only. The size of the assignment shall be about 1,500 words. excluding appendices, if any. Submission willbe in hardcopy with a copy of Turnitin Report for the study report in Microsoft Word. Anything else thatare considered to be advantageous to supplement your work should be included on additional pagesas appendices following the main text and placed after the reference sub-section.End

Aims of Assessment

The module aims to polish and enhance student’s knowledge of Computational Fluid Dynamics theory and to

develop their ability to use CFD software (e.g. PBS) for modelling fires in a realistic built environment. This is a

key employment skill and necessary for modern engineering design solutions.

Learning Outcomes

This piece of assessment will test your ability to meet learning outcomes 1,2, 3, 4 and 5 as described in your

module descriptor.

Effectively use CFD software associated with the module

0 Carry out post processing of calculated data and understand procedures of validation and verification of

numerical solutions

Critically review specialist CFD literature

0 Model fires in a realistic built environment using CFD

0 Explain of the limitations of CPD software
