understand globalization Academic Essay

Look in your bag/satchel/briefcase/backpack, at the tags on your clothing, at your cell phone, etc. Each student should try to find at least one object you often have with you. Do some research about this object. Record your discoveries.
What RELEVANT facts can you provide about each of the countries/regions where the object was made?
For those not made in the United States, why do you think these objects were made overseas?
Who profits from these objects being made in another country but sold here?
Who suffers or is exploited, if anyone?
Speculate briefly on why you think our global economy is set up in this way?

KEY POINTS
Over the course of the next few weeks we are going to be exploring how we are connected to each other all over the world. The ways that we are connected to the people who make our products (in China, Taiwan, etc.) is NOT NEW. The reality is that the world has been connected for a long time. The degree of connectedness is increasing rapidly, though, introducing new issues associated with the pace of change? For example: is almost everything you own made outside the USA? What percentage of your property is made domestically? .

Submit your response in not more than 350 words.

THIS IS AN EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENT AND MAY BE SUBMITTED ANY TIME BETWEEN 28 Jan., and 18 May, 2016, 6pm.

This was originally an experimental assignment that we left in–people liked it a lot. It’s a “get your feet wet” exercise on thinking about globalization and its impact on you. We recommend you tackle this assignment EARLY in the class. Thanks.
