Assignment 3: Summary Writing
Description
In Assignment 2, you wrote a short summary of a section of an article from your LEAP textbook. For this assignment, you will summarize the entire article. You may choose to use a portion of your Assignment 2 summary, but it will need to be shortened as you will now be summarizing a longer text.
Similar to the process used for Assignment 2, this is a two-step assignment in which you:
1. submit your first draft to receive a Turnitin Originality Report, and
2. submit a revised draft to be graded.
You may submit your summary assignment as many times as you wish for feedback from Turnitin. Only the final submission will be graded.
Note that it may take up to 24 hours to generate your Turnitin Originality Report, so submit your drafts in time for you to receive the report, and make revisions based on the feedback you receive.
Summary Writing Guidelines
You will summarize the entire article from Reading 2: “Blogs as participatory media and social software” by T. Flew and R. Smith (2008) found on p. 108-112 in the LEAP textbook (Chapter 5). Your summary should be no longer than 200 words. You may use part of your summary from Assignment 2; however, you will need to shorten and condense your work.
Remember to follow the guidelines for effective summary writing as taught in Module 04. It is also important to review your originality report and revise your work before the final submission in order to ensure you are using effective paraphrasing strategies.
Include your reference from Assignment 2 at the end of your summary.
In order to meet the criteria for Assignment 3, you should:
• Review Module 04: Paraphrasing and Summarizing
• Introduce your summary with the correct topic sentence form (See examples below)
• Include a reference at the end of your summary (use APA or another referencing style with the help of a site such as http://www.citationmachine.net, opens in a new window)
• Follow the techniques for good summary writing given in Module 04
• Write the document as one paragraph (approximately 200 words (+ /– 30)
• Paraphrase the reading’s information (do not quote). Use the strategies for effective paraphrasing presented inModule 04 and practised in Assignment 2.
• Do not use “I”
• Double space your writing
• Include a word count
• Proofread carefully
• Use your Error Record Master Sheet to identify areas that you should work on improving for this assignment.
