Social media response Academic Essay

Please respond to the following
When it comes to social media, using it while in your workplace has been questioned as being appropriate. According to this article from 2012, the NLRB or National Labor Relations Board, employee’s rights to outlet to social media about work has been very confusing (Troutman, 2012). An example of this confusion is that an employee could rant online about food served to customers at a work party and not be in danger of job termination. On the other hand, an employee could be in danger of job termination when talking about an accident that happens near his/her place of employment. According to the NLRB, having policies on social media is deemed to be unlawful (Troutman, 2012) . Deeming these policies unlawful puts these companies in a tough place. Companies want to get a grip on the ethics of social media but the NLRB ultimately makes this impossible.

The NLRB is laying the law down when it comes to employer’s social media policies. Deeming it unlawful for employers to establish policies makes a lot sense. Speaking on social media could be viewed as a version of free speech and putting a lock on our first amendment. I also could see that having these policies could seem a little overboard. In hindsight, commenting on social media is like having a conversation with many people conveniently through technology. Having a company put policies on that is metaphorically like putting a muzzle on a tamed dog.

Blocking the employers is said to be unlawful but in contrast having policies on social media is something that should be required for all companies. Having these policies would not mean ultimately banning the use of social media but it would provide guidelines on the ethics of social media in a work place. Having these guidelines would ensure that employees ethically respect the companies they work for and not have any issues on social media that relates to work. Issues on social media about work could potentially leak into the workplace and cause rifts between employees. Another reason why companies should have these policies is to keep employees productive. In conclusion having these social media policies would protect the employees and the employers.

I would say that social media should be limited to personal use and that it is not an effective business communication tool. When it comes to communication, personal and professional should stay separated. Effective business communication should stay limited to in person, phone, and e-mail. Social media is a personal outlet, where personal life is put online and should stay away from one’s professional life.
