Purpose:
This assignment enables students to apply theory to practice by viewing and analysing an
ethical conflict (or dilemma) in a film. Students will develop the ability to identify and
evaluate the ethical risk of a dilemma, apply relevant ethical and legal principles to a
scenario, and develop familiarity with the code of ethics or standards of practice relevant
to their chosen field.
Process:
Students will select a scenario involving an ethical conflict or dilemma in the movie Coach Carter
and write a case study to:
a) briefly describe the ethical dilemma or conflict and the characters involved
b) analyse the ethical and legal principles and relevant social context in the selected
scenario
c) draw on the references and resources provided in this unit to recommend
appropriate responses, based on ethical principles and legislation and codes of
ethics, and to identify any limitations or conflicts on ethical and legal codes
Marking Criteria – Case study
1. Brief summary of case study and its context in the film or episode
is provided
2. Social, legal and ethical and/or professional issues raised by the
case study and analysis of the social context are identified
3. Appropriate intervention plan is outlined based on codes of ethics,
professional standards and legislation
4. Analysis of professional challenges you would face in working with
this issue is provided
5. Analysis of personal challenges you would face in working with
this issue is provided
6. Accurate application of relevant literature and theory throughout
the case study is provided
Structure, Presentation and Referencing
1. Main ideas clearly and logically presented
2. Relevant research and scholarship literature used appropriately to
support claims
3. Correct academic writing style used, including correct spelling,
grammar and punctuation
