Classmate post:In “Sonny’s Blues,” the narrator (the older brother) reacts to pain and personal loss by internalizing and becoming from very angry. It’s clear to me from the beginning of the story that he has a hard time processing and interpreting his own emotions. It continues throughout the entire story, from him first hearing of Sonny’s incarceration on through bringing Sonny back into his life. It’s speaks of him having so much to say but, not knowing how to convey his emotions. He is constantly bouncing from one emotion to the other. He is happy about him being back then; doubt sets in and he is worried and watching for signs of addiction. He feels a sense of ownership and like he needs to protect Sonny but, it seems like he feels very burdened by the responsibilty.
Sonny ,on the other-hand, seems to completely shut down. It mentions his tendency to process negative emotion this way early on (in a flashback) with his father. I think that he learned to release this pent up emotion through music and drugs.
In many ways I can relate with them both. However, I find myself relating closer with the older brother. I seem to have a habit of internalizing all of my emotions and, somehow convincing myself they aren’t justified.
