Researching Media and Communication
identify one subject area of interest.
This assessment requires students to write a proposal for a research project.

The research proposal should include:
? A title and subtitle;
? An introduction which introduces the topic, sets it in context, specifies the research question, and explains why the research matters;
? A preliminary literature review which surveys existing relevant published work and synthesises the key ideas and concepts from this work;
? A methods section which describes, explains and justifies the research methods you have chosen to tackle your research question. This should be a clear and succinct account of what you are going to do and why;
? A brief discussion of any ethical issues that are raised by the proposed topic or methodology, and an indication of how these ethical issues will be dealt with;
? A brief conclusion stating the hoped-for contribution to knowledge of the research;
? A bibliography (10 to 20 entries – most relevant academic books, book chapters and journal articles).
Originality and quality of research idea – The extent to which the proposal tackles a research topic of some significance, novelty and relevance to media and communication studies; the extent to which the proposal provides a clear formulation of research questions and explains why the research is worth doing (contribution to knowledge).

Literature review – The extent to which the proposal shows familiarity and engagement with the academic literature related to the research topic; the proposal must include a bibliographic section (distinct from the reference list) providing between 10 and 20 academic works related to the proposed research

Research methodology – Appropriate choice of research methods and appreciation of the problems and limitations of the chosen methodology. Also (if appropriate) awareness of any ethical issues related to the research and discussion of how these issues will be dealt with.

Writing – Clear, articulate writing with good sentence structure; appropriate academic style.

Presentation and referencing – Cover page provides all required information, including student name and ID, assignment title and number and title of the proposed research; clear format and layout; accurate and full referencing that conforms to the University guidelines
