Report Academic Essay

A strategy report. Over the course of the module, we will be exploring how one creates genetically modified organisms for use in the biotechnology industries. You will be required to explore a particular organism, gene or pathway you feel has a possible application, in consultation with the module tutor. Your strategy report should include an Introduction, Planned Methods, Predicted Results and a Discussion. Further guidance on each section is given in the suggestions below.
Introduction:
This section should answer the following questions:
. What is the problem you mean to address?

. What is the application/gene you have chosen?

. How will this help solve the problem?

. What are the outcomes you plan to achieve?

Planned Methods:
This section should be written as a strategy plan. It can be combined with Predicted Results if you wish, but this must be made clear in your report. It should contain a detailed plan of how you will create your particular organism/application, using the techniques discussed in the lectures. You should use technical language throughout.

Predicted Results:
There are several checkpoints that should occur during your strategy. Therefore, this section should include the results you would expect at every stage of your process, for example an annotated vector map showing recombinant DNA sequences, or a diagram of a restriction endonuclease digest. It is your chance to demonstrate a clear, detailed understanding of the techniques involved and how the whole process fits together.

Discussion:
This section should discuss the strengths and weaknesses of your strategy and overall experimental aim. This should be placed in context of current practices and/or research. You should be referencing up to date journal articles throughout your report, but particularly in this section.

11. Assessment criteria

Assignment 002 will be evaluated on:
The clarity of thought and depth of understanding demonstrated in the scientific report
The depth of knowledge demonstrated in the report
The structure of the report
The quality of the references used
The ability to draw upon information gleaned from sources other than the lectures Presentation: Use of English, writing style and references.
