By primary research, I mean choose published articles where the authors collected data on real human beings. These articles will have a section called “Methods,” “Methodology,” or “Procedures.” Choose articles that fit your idea for a research project if you can. Each review should be a minimum of two (2) double spaced pages. The paper can be as long as you think it needs to be, but there is great value in being succinct. Post a copy of the article or provide an Internet link.
4. Design. Identify this study as experimental, quasi-experimental, correlational, mixed methods, constructivist (or one of several qualitative designs) or mixed or some special method. You may include action research and evaluation designs too. Explain what this type of study is and why a researcher would want to use this type of design.
5. Research Questions. Identify any hypotheses or research questions. In a few sentences summarize the theory that supports these hypotheses. Do references appear robust enough to support theory, hypothesis, and gap in the literature? Explain why this is so?
6. Participants. Evaluate the participants and their recruitment. Does the recruiting and assignment to treatment (if applicable) influence findings and study quality.
7. Sample. Evaluate the sample. Does the size and composition of the study fit the type of study design? Explain how so with evidence from the text.
8. Methods. Explain what procedures were used in the study. Include procedures used to control for threats to validity or credibility.
9. Analysis. Evaluate analysis procedures of the article? Were the correct procedures used? Could other or additional analysis procedures be used? Explain what they could be. Are any charts and graphs used helpful? Why or why not?
10. Evaluation. Give a general evaluation of the study. Was it useful for the intended audience? Was it useful for you? Can you identify areas of possible bias? Was the writing clear? Summarize your overall findings.
