Is the sovereign state simply an institution of power? That is, is it that which is in the interests of the stronger? If it is only that, how strong and lasting can it be? Rely chiefly on Grigsby chapters 3 and 4, but note the possible contributions of at least two of the other readings, e.g., Plato, Rousseau, Wolin. How has the modern state of the 1500s in Europe evolved and what are the alternatives?

How would you reconcile the tendency of most people simply to obey those in power, as was evident in the movie Obedience, with the oft proclaimed individualism and belief in democracy which rests on the free and independent exercise of individual judgment? Refer to the materials in the Grigs by text and a minimum of any three of the readings.

Discuss Gandhi’s and especially King’s philosophy of non-violence, and contrast to Hitler’s use and justification of violence.  What is their justification for the uses of power? What are the strengths and weaknesses of their arguments?   Rely on lecture, PowerPoints, Wikipedia articles, and King’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail.
