Physics Rocket from Chicago to Boston Academic Essay

Physics Rocket from Chicago to Boston

A group of physics students from Chicago have decided to test their knowledge of physics concepts learned in the first 9 weeks of school by completing a study involving a model rocket ship with the capabilities of ejecting a package. The package contains various physics gadgets that their friends in Boston are waiting for. They have completed their calculations and have scheduled the launch time for 11:55:20 am on Saturday, October 4.

More details:

The rocket will reach the very tip of the atmosphere, but not go outside of it into outer space.
The package will be ejected at the top of the rocket’s launch on the east side of the rocket-directed straight east (towards Boston).
The package is ejected with a velocity equal to the speed of sound.
Questions to answer:

1. How long does it take the package to land on the ground?

2. How far does the package travel?

3. Where does the package land? (Hint: use a map and be specific)

4. At what time locally (where the package lands) does the package land?

5. Will the students in Boston receive the package?

6. What might have gone wrong with the Chicago students calculations? (Hint: look carefully at the numbers)

7. Give your answers to #1 and 2 in two different units, for a total of 4 conversions. ie, use a conversion to make mph into m/s or km/s, etc.
