This assessment highlights the important structural, cultural and political changes which are occurring in healthcare and hospitals across the industrialized world. These changes significantly impact on all healthcare workers, including nurses. In this assessment you have an opportunity to address and include issues of power, leadership, people, change and personal and professional development. These are all important aspects of any position of leadership.
In preparation for this assessment, you will need to obtain some resources about your workplace:
the annual report;
the organisational chart
(These documents should be readily available, as they are public documents.)
For students currently not in the workplace obtain an annual report from an organisation that you may have worked for and that you know about in detail (eg your local hospital).

Your task.

Frequently organizations have two structures: the formal one is written on organisational charts; the other is the everyday relationship of the people in the organization, i.e. how they go about their work.
Refer to the annual report of your workplace. Find the vision, mission and values statements, and take your time to read carefully through these.
Write a report on the structure and culture of your organisation. The report should address the following:
1. What is the ‘publicised picture’ of your organisation?
(around 300-350 words).

Describe how your organisation is being presented to the external world, and whether your own experience supports this presentation. For example
:
Does the annual report “paint the picture” of the organisation? If so how?

Examine any photos and what they depict. What do they tell you visually about the organisation?

What does the report tell you about the culture of the organisation?

What other aspects of the organization can you glean from this report? Reflecting on your own experience of the organisation, Are the statements in the report reflected in the actual performance of the organisation?

Does the real world match the messages espoused in the report?

2. Compare the formal and informal structures of your organisation.
(around 1000 words)

Draw organisational charts to depict the formal and informal structure of your organisation, then compare these two charts.
Does the formal structure of the organisation address the vision and mission of the organisation?
How different is the informal structure?
3. How could the structure be redesigned or improved?
(around 150 words)
Can you make any suggestions to redesign or improve the formal structure of your organisation?

TIP: Drawing organisational charts:
Microsoft Office allows you to draw an organizational chart – click the Insert tab, in the Illustrations group, click SmartArt, then in the Choose a SmartArt Graphic gallery, click Hierarchy, click an organizational chart layout (such as Organizational Chart), and then click OK.
