A formal analysis is a visual description of what the viewer sees. You have to carefully study the artwork to effectively write this paper. Spend at least fifteen minutes with the artwork.
Take notes to write down your initial impressions. Describe the subject of the artwork. Use the museum label for assistance. (I will upload the museum label too)
Then, address formal elements of style, such as scale, depth, medium, line, and composition. Describe whether figures are naturalistic or stylized and explain your reasoning. After you have exhausted the formal issues, discuss how style adds to the meaning of the artwork. Use the museum label and website to support your analysis. If neither is helpful, you can use other museum websites with similar artworks, your textbook, and the library.
