The purpose of this assignment is to develop an understanding of how different forms of media (social media, news, movies, television, advertisements, newspapers, magazines, etc.) influence common narratives regarding homelessness and how it is understood in the public sphere.
A) Select 5 different media sources depicting homelessness.
B) Using course readings (min. 5) prepare a 2 paragraph analysis of each media source. You must include an image of the source.
C) When developing your analysis consider:
a. What narrative of homelessness is presented in the media sources?
b. Are there stereotypes and myths being used? Perhaps very subtly?
c. Is this narrative supported or countered by the reading(s) you’ve chosen?
d. Do you think the narrative presented in the media sources is perpetuating stereotypes
about homelessness or breaking them down?
d) You are encouraged to look for themes, patterns and connections between the 5 media sources
you are analyzing.
e) HINT***Consider the discussions generated by Who all are homeless people, Why they are homeless( reason), Names
called for homeless people.
f) Bibliography: You must use a minimum of 10 sources. 5 pieces of media + 5 course readings
are required.
