The student will write a literary analysis essay of a short story, analyzing and interpreting a significant theme, symbol, or literary convention present in the work. They will choose a canonical work of short fiction and identify one of these present in the work. They must examine how the theme is presented and utilized in each work. They must convince the reader that their interpretation is a reasonable analysis based on a thoughtful and imaginative reading of the story.
The student must use quotes from the story to support their claims. Their claims must be rooted firmly in the text, although creative and unexpected interpretations are welcome provided they supported by textual evidence. Interpretations which are too esoteric or difficult to prove should be avoided, but the efficacy of an unsuccessful attempt will be considered when grading.
The essay must be well organized with a clear thesis. It must include effective transitions. It must be written in formal language for an audience who is familiar with both the work and the conventions of English and American Literature.
You are expected to cite your primary source (the short story I tell you to write) appropriately. Failure to do so will greatly affect the grade. Essay should be in (MLA or APA), consistently. It must also be relatively free of mechanical errors. Must be submitted in 12 point Times New Roman font with 1 in. margins all around. The length requirement is 4 pages.
