From a linguistic point of view, there are no good or bad varieties of a language. However, there is a social process called “language subordination” whereby some varieties are treated as having less value than others. Can you describe how this process works in any social situation you are familiar with?

Language Subordination happens when a certain language is considered superior to another language. It is also the process of forcing a person to change his language in favor of a language that the majority speaks. It may simply mean, forgetting another’s accent in favor of the other.

 

This situation can be seen in many call center recruitments where the trainees during their trainings are required to speak and have an accent appropriate to the language to use at work. Examples of these are British and American accents that depends on the client or the account given. Another example is the way DJ’s speak especially to non-native English speakers. They tend to set aside their own language for the sake of their work and to look cool. Some situations are not good to look at all the more so when language subordination is done to insult the person about his accent and try to change him into a language that he does not prefer but preferred by many people.
