Choose any of the poems in the book by Langston Hughes and consider the following:

What, exactly, is the poet’s subject? What is the dramatic conflict in the poem? Who is the speaker? What images does the poet use to illustrate the conflict? How
successful is the outcome? Comment fully on the poet’s style, techniques and syntax. Your submission should be at least three pages long but no more than five. (Appx
1000 words =/-).

Use whatever outside sources for this assignment that you feel will strengthen your argument, and quote words and lines from the poem whenever necessary.

The key points about a poem you MAY need to discuss in your essay are:

* the overall meaning and circumstance of the poem (its ‘big picture’)

* the EFFECTS of the poet’s especially chosen words, phrases, lines and stanzas

* the METHODS used to create such effects

* the PURPOSE of creating such effects

* the layers of MEANING created

* the way this meaning builds up as a STRUCTURE.

The key considerations that need to find their way into your essay are:

* WHAT it’s about – its story and/or circumstance?

* WHY was it written – its purpose?

* HOW and WHY have its effects have been created?
