Immunization practices have been under close scrutiny since the recent outbreaks of pertussis and measles over the last 5 years. Primary care providers are faced with challenges related to the refusal of vaccines by guardians and providing effective education to inform parents of benefits and dispel myths regarding the vaccines themselves.
For this assignment please pick a vaccination given during the routine child/teen series per the Center for Disease Control and Prevention Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices as of 2015. For this vaccination, the student will give a brief history of the vaccine development, specific illness targeted with changes in screening in the primary care environment, current vaccination rates (both local and national), and most recent information on prevalence of the illness protected
against (i.e. percentage of those who are suffering with HPV). Secondly, the student will address any myths or concerns specific to the vaccination chosen and give literature to counter or support these concerns. Finally, the student will develop an education handout for the child and parent for the vaccine that they feel would both encourage and educate against vaccine refusal.
This assignment should follow the rules of APA for both formatting and referencing. Please keep this assignment between 3 to 5 pages in length, not including references or handout. Each handout will be provided to all students to use as part of their pediatric reference notebook.
