It is important for children to learn the difference between right and wrong at an early age. Punishment is necessary to help them learn this distinction.

What sort of punishment should parents and teachers be allowed to use to teach good behavior to children?

Answer:

Introduction: (Introduce the topic, state your opinion and MENTION “sort punishment.”)

The right moral and ethical education of individuals begins at a young age (opening sentence). I strongly believe that a system of rewards and punishments plays a vital role in a child’s learning since this helps the youngster distinguish between right and wrong (opinion). For this purpose, parents and teachers should impose constructive punishments such as social service (sort of punishment).

Body Paragraph 1: (EXPLAIN your opinion)

Without rewards and punishments, children cannot learn about many moral and ethical issues (IDEA mentioned). Though parents may explain to their child the reasons behind moral behavior, the child may not be in a position to understand the difference. In such situations, mild punishments for wrong behavior and rewards for right behavior enable a child to make distinctions. For example, in Sikhism, a religion in South Asia, young children are given the punishment of cleaning the shoes of devotees in a temple. They are sometimes punished with the job of cooking food for the poor at the temple. These punishments help a child realize his mistakes (IDEA explained with an example).

Body Paragraph 2: (Sort of Punishment—Constructive)

Despite the need for punishment to teach a child (just to maintain cohesion with the previous paragraph), parents and teachers should make sure that the penalty is constructive in nature and not destructive (IDEA mentioned). A child should not be physically or mentally abused. Instead, he should be given punishments that enable him to realize his mistakes. For instance, a child who misbehaves with parents should be made to spend some time in an old-age home so that he develops the maturity to respect others. Similarly, courts often punish juveniles with social service for misdemeanors such as drinking and smoking (IDEA explained with an example).

In conclusion, punishment is necessary for the moral and ethical development of a child. If children are not given mild, constructive punishments, they will not be able to understand the difference between good and bad. This will make a society less stable and sustainable.
