With the widespread availability of the Internet and smartphones, free music and films are readily accessible to everyone. I think this has numerous negative consequences since the people lose focus on important issues and the entertainment industry suffers heavy losses.

With the easy and free availability of these sources of entertainment, people tend to spend more time watching the videos and listening to the audio. They often engage in these activities during office hours or while cooking food at home. This reduces the economic productivity of the people and curtails their social engagement. For example, A recent Google study revealed that most youngsters in the age group of 22 to 30 watch free Youtube movies and music during peak business hours from 10 am to 5 pm. This reduced the economic output the youngsters can produce.

Moreover, free availability of movies and music leads to lesser revenue for the industry and this may also result in losses. Various newly released films can be easily downloaded through pirate websites for free and people watch them without paying anything to the producers. This leads to heavy loss of revenue. For example, a survey has pointed out the music industry has lost 90 percent of its revenue in the last decade due to the replacement of compact discs with online free media.
