Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The primary sources are Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” and a video recording of his “I Have a Dream” speech. The secondary sources are a
biography of Dr. King and a scholarly article focusing on the legacy of his identity. Additionally, you will read pages 124-127 (“Analyzing Texts, Documents, Records, and Artifacts”) in The
Research Writer. This assignment consists of two parts, which are described in detail below:
1) Critically reading/watching and analyzing the primary and secondary sources provided to you, focusing on our course theme of identity.
2) Writing a 5-8 page essay that compares the primary and secondary sources in terms of Dr. King’s identity. How does Dr. King’s representation of himself, via his letter and speech, compare or
contrast to his representation in the secondary sources? What aspects of his identity seem to change over time? What do you think Dr. King felt to be the primary focus of his identity? How do you
think Dr. King incorporates certain aspects of his identity (father, clergyman, African-American, etc.) into his works? How do the secondary sources interpret these traits?
