Sustainability Concepts and Issues
1000 1200 words
Your task
You are to write a short argumentative essay that identifies one major change that is necessary for the
achievement of a sustainable society. There are numerous possible changes on which you could focus, including
in such areas as societal attitudes, economics, wealth distribution, population, resources usage and politics.
Because this is an argumentative essay, you will need to provide clear and persuasive arguments in support of
your choice (these are sometimes called premises). In doing so you will need to refer to credible definitions of
sustainability and/or sustainability principles and to argue why the current situation is unsustainable or unable to
allow the realisation of a sustainable society in the future. You may wish to consider sustainability in a global
context or you may focus primarily on Australia or another country, in which case a brief global perspective should
also be provided.
Aims
The aims of this essay include testing your knowledge and skills in the following areas:
Collecting and evaluating information by independent research
Understanding and identifying the relationships between theory, reading and practice
Relating individual issues and responses to themes and objectives of the course as a whole
Developing a coherent and well justified argument to support conclusions or recommendations.
Word limit
The word count must be between 1000 and 1200 words (there is no +/ 10%). The word count includes everything
in the body of the essay. Intext references and any direct quotes used are counted. It excludes the title page and
the list of references. Note that while the penalties for going over the word limit are somewhat limited, assignments
that areÕÉ≠†Њ† excessively long will not be read beyond 20% over the word limit, i.e. over 1440 words).
Special requirements

In addition to referencing any sources that provide evidence in support of your arguments, you are required to
reference credible sources for definitions of sustainability, theory regarding sustainability, or credible commentary
on the chosen issue. Many such references are provided in the study materials, including many readings, which
you may reference. A minimum of five credible sources must be referenced (credible references include the
textbook, the readings, other reputable books, refereed journal articles and online material from credible
organisations including government and United Nations departments and agencies, and respected nongovernment
organisations). You can also reference sources that are not necessarily credible such as newspapers,
websites etc. but these do not count towards the minimum five credible sources.
You must write in your own words with a maximum of 10% of words being direct quotations.
