Use the knowledge and experience you have gained during the term to evaluate another speakerâs performance. You will analyze the speakerâs verbal content and nonverbal behavior.
2. For the final paper you will watch two (2) TED Talks and analyze and compare them in a 3-5 page,
double-spaced paper using at least 10 concepts from your textbook or class notes. Each TED Talk must be a least 5 minutes long and in English. Examine what the speakers did well in addition to discussing areas of improvement for each speaker by using course concepts. Each time you use a course concept, underline it in your paper. You must be able to see and hear the speaker in the video.
3. A minimum of two (2) outside, Internet sources must be cited in the paper â these sources must be articles about public speaking. Synthesize the outside sources with what you have learned in class. Cite all 2 sources as well as the 2 TED Talks using MLA or APA format with a Works Cited and in-text citations (see citation the citation PPT on Canvas). Each TED Talk does not count as one of the 2 outside sources (therefore you should have a minimum of 4 sources cited in your Works Cited list). If you have less than 2 outside sources or you only watch one TED talk you will not pass this assignment and you will earn a D or F on the paper. The textbook does not count as an outside source.
Format: Times New Roman font, 12-point size; double-spaced; one-inch margins all around; name, date, and assignment title in left heading; right header with your last name and page number (follow formatting guidelines in syllabus).
6. Tip â you may want to have a speech evaluation form in front of you to help with ideas for this paper (use the introduction or informative speech evaluation form you have received with your speeches).
7. Open your paper with a brief introduction that explains who each speaker is and give a short description of each speech.
8. In the first part of the body of your paper, analyze and evaluate each speakerâs verbal content. Is their speech informative or persuasive? Is their main topic or claim easy to identify? Are there clear main points, and are those supported with additional details, examples, stories and information? Do they use the same 4-part introduction and conclusion we use in this class, or do they use an abbreviated version? How clear is the introduction and conclusion? What type of attention getter and memorable ending do they use? Does the speaker use clear transitions? Does the speaker use a visual aid? If so, what type of aid do they use? What suggestions would you offer them, if any, regarding their presentation of the visual aid? Please answer these questions (not just yes or no answers, but use examples), and indicate if the speaker could improve or clarify some aspect of their verbal content or visual aid. Remember to incorporate outside sources here and underline each specific public speaking term you use (instead of talking about vocal variety talk about each part of their voice such as the rate and tone of their voice and how they use pauses effectively for instance).
9. In the second part of the body of your paper, analyze and evaluate each speakerâs nonverbal behavior and delivery. Using terminology from class/the book, please consider the following questions: does the speaker have effective vocal variety? Does the speaker have charisma and enthusiasm, or are they more monotone? Does the speaker use gestures and movement effectively? How is the speakerâs eye contact â do they appear to make a connection with their audience? What kinds of facial expressions does the speaker make, and do they match the speakerâs verbal content? How does the speakerâs attire and
appearance affect their presentation and credibility? Please answer these questions, and indicate if the speaker could improve some aspect of their nonverbal behavior or delivery.
10. Briefly conclude your paper. Compare and contrast the speakers â what are the strengths of each speaker? Please indicate your overall evaluation of the speaker and their presentation. You do not have to necessarily assign them a grade, but do explain whether each speech you think it was below average, average, or above average and why. Discuss the power and influence public speaking can have based on watching these speeches- how did these TED talks impact you? What did they leave you thinking about? What is the mark of a good speaker?
