What are the criteria that candidate countries need to meet in order to become eligible for EU membership? Use past and current examples in your discussion.

Two sets of criteria are expected to be mentioned: The Acquis Communautaire (‘the EU as it is’) and The Copenhagen Criteria (1993) – created requirements (in addition to the acquis) regarding
stable institutions, democracy, human rights, capability to cope with competitive pressures, ability to take on membership obligations etc., good relations.
