Describe in clear and specific terms a controversial or ethical issue facing the medical community (stem cell
research, assisted suicide, medical marijuana, etc.).
Read the guidelines “Constructing Extended Arguments” to assist with your paper.
You must have a thesis for your paper.
List arguments from both sides of the issue, organizing them into premises and conclusions. Evaluate the
strengths and weaknesses of each argument. Identify the most important arguments.
Your paper should:
Defend the main idea
Refute the opposing view(s)
Reach a conclusion or propose a solution
An example of an extended argument is provided in Chapter 10 (Rationing Health Care).
Your paper should begin with a paragraph that introduces the issue and should end with a paragraph that sums
up and concludes.
Requirements
The research paper must be at least 10 full pages in length, plus a bibliography page.
The paper must be typed in 12point Times New Roman with double spacing.
The paper must use a minimum of 10 major references that are reliable.
Plagiarism is considered academic dishonesty. You must reference your information presented throughout your
paper in APA format. Remember, you haveÕÉ≠†Њ† a library icon at the course site for assistance. “Ask the
librarian” for additional resources.
The paper must have a cover sheet with — at a minimum — your name, paper title, date and course.
