1- Discuss the history of immigration to the U.S, as well as the internal migration that have occurred up to the 1920s in terms of the their economic effects. Contrast the experience of organized
labor (unions) with that of capitalist enterprise.

2- Discuss the differences between England’s colonization of North America and Spain’s conquest of what we now call “Latin America”. Why did the colonial ambitions of France and Holland fail (
excepting the outpost of Francophone Quebec), while those of England survived for nearly two centuries of economic development?

3- For many American institutions, there is a mixture of both strong and weak “federalism”, the former epitomized by Hamilton ( and Lincoln), and the latter by Jefferson ( and Jackson). Discuss how
these played out right up to the 1920s in regard to: the banking system, attitudes and policies towards industrial concentration, and of course, slavery.
