Criminal law and justice policy in relation to illegal drug use can influence other areas of the criminal justice system. White and Perrone state that ‘There is a strong connection between drug use, drug abuse and the institutions of criminal justice’ (p. 241).
In your view, should the use of illegal drugs be considered a criminal law problem or a social problem (or both)? Please outline (a) what you consider to be relevant issues for consideration in this debate; and (b) how government, law enforcement and the community should respond to this type of crime?
