Question: Outline and critically discuss the ways in which your studies have developed your understanding of the inter-relationship between ‘deviance’ and social control
Task: You are required to write an essay whereby you reflect upon the ways in which the module content has widened your knowledge of any of the topics to which you have been introduced to. This essay will be assessing learning outcomes 1-4.
Guidance: You will contribute to your essay in stages or ‘patches’ and therefore it will be assembled gradually during the course of the module. Your assessment is structured in this way in order to:
 avoid the last minute rush of having to write the entire essay at the end of the teaching, when time is short;
 enable you to give each other early constructive feedback as to how clearly you presented your ideas and how they might perhaps be developed;
 enable you to write about all aspects of the module content (instead of having to select just a few aspects for a specific essay topic).
Keep a journal throughout the duration of this module: In preparation for the assessment it is a good idea to record your views on the topics for discussion each week prior to the lectures and seminars. Try to think about where your own ideas have come from and why you hold your particular views. Prior to any reading and before the lecture you should record:
 What do you think the topic is about?
 How do you feel about the topic?
After the lecture, reading and seminar it is a good idea to record the following:
 How did your own view compare with the perspectives we have considered on the module?
 Did any of your views change as a result of discussion and further reading?
 Try to identify the reasons why your views changed/stayed the same.
